Magnetic pulse welding of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass with aluminum plate
Abstract:
Welding of bulk metallic glasses is intriguing and puzzling since, but crucial to their engineering applications. Here, magnetic pulse welding as a new strategy was introduced to weld Zr65Al10Ni10Cu15 bulk metallic glass with aluminum plate. The alluring finding is that a thin interlayer (~2.5 μm) composed of amorphous phase and Al nano-particles was formed at the welding interface, exhibiting characteristics of vortex structure. Theoretical analysis revealed that these vortex structures within the interlayer were initially triggered by local metal melting and subsequently driven by stress wave that was caused by high velocity impact.
